hypnobirthing FAQ

Who is this course for?

Whether you are a first time birther or someone who has birthed before (vaginally or c-section), this course is for you if;

– you have some fear or anxiety around birth
– the system let you down before and now you want to take control of your birth and your decisions
– you have a partner or birth support person who doesn’t know anything about birth but wants to support you
– you want to inform yourself about all the options available to you
– you want to learn some tools and skills to use throughout labour to help you stay calm and cope with the intensity of labour
– you have questions about birth but you aren’t sure where to find help
– you want a calm birth

Do I need a partner/birth support person to attend classes with me?

I recommend this, but it’s not essential. Some parts of the course include practical activities, but if you are happy to be my model I can be your partner for the class. You are welcome to bring your doula along if you have one. If you are birthing without a support person you can still use many of the techniques and tools from the course so don’t let not having a support person put you off.

When should I take the course?

Between 20-30 weeks is ideal. This gives you a lot of time to practice practice practice. If you have just discovered hypnobirthing it is never too late to attend the course however please contact me for a more suitable option if you don’t have a lot of time before your birth.

Will this make my birth pain free?

It is possible but not guaranteed. Everyone’s perception of pain is different. By understanding where the pain originates, the job that it is doing (pain with a purpose!), reframing it in positive language and practicing self hypnosis it is possible to reduce and in some cases eliminate pain.

What do I need to bring?

You just need to bring yourself and your birth support person (if you have one!). Wear comfortable clothing and if you happen to have a rebozo or long scarf you can bring that along too. You’ll also receive an awesome resource folio in the first session so bring this along to future sessions.

How long does the course take?

It’s roughly 12 hours of content however there are some different options available if you’re short on time. Send me an email to chat about what would is best for you.

Is hypnobirthing only for people who want a natural drug-free birth?

No! While a lot of people who are interested in hypnobirthing are planning a natural, drug-free birth it doesn’t mean that it is only for those people. The course prepares you to calmly meet any turn your birth may take (birth is unpredictable!). I do, however, want you to be fully informed about your options so that when you make your decision you know all sides of the story including benefits and risks of any kind of intervention.

Can I hypnobirth in a hospital?

Hell yes you can, you can hypnobirth any where.

What should I expect from the course?

Be prepared to learn about birth, how your body is perfectly designed to birth, how to navigate the health system and make sure you are making the best decision for your personal circumstances. You will also learn a whole bunch of tools and techniques to help you stay calm and focussed throughout labour and birth. Look at it this way – by the end you will be feeling confident, prepared and excited for your birth and your birth support person will feel good knowing they have practical tools to use to support you.

The course is soooooo much more than just about hypnosis, but if you want to learn more about the role that hypnosis can play in birth you can read my blog post here.

I can’t attend the course in person, what options do I have?

Never fear, Hypnobirthing Australia™ have a kick-ass online course, Hypnobubs. More info here – you can also upgrade to include a 1.5 hr private session with me so we can unpack the course content and focus on your unique circumstance.

What if my circumstances change or I need to have a caesarean?

What happens once I finish the course with you? Do we part ways never to speak again?

It doesn’t end there my friend! I am here to support you right through to birth. It is common to have plenty of questions come up once you have finished the course and your pregnancy progresses so I am here to be a sounding board and point you in the right direction if you need more information. I’d also love to hear about your birth story so will touch base a few weeks after your guess date to see how you are going. Contact me at any time, I mean it!!
